Whitbourne parents file another appeal to keep school open

Parents of students who attend Whitbourne Elementary are once again going to court to try to keep their school open.

The Help Whitbourne Elementary Committee has filed an appeal with the Newfoundland and Labrador Court of Appeal to challenge the decision by the English School District to close the school.

The committee argues the school board was unelected when it made the decision.

"Rather than wait for school board elections on November 22nd, 2016 the board decided to allow the same unelected trustees to continue with a flawed school review process which ended with a school closure vote on September 20th," said Wade Smith, chair of the committee, in a release.

"We are very disappointed that parents again have to look to the courts for help to save our school."

Parents are arguing the trustees of the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District were"not given proper direction by the minister of education for postponement of the election," reads a media release.

Last year, a Supreme Court judge quashed the school board's vote to close the school.

However, the school board voted again in September in favour of the closure.
