Death of 12-year-old boy in Rankin Inlet, Nunavut, ruled a homicide

RCMP say the death of a 12-year-old boyin Rankin Inlet, Nunavut, is being investigated as a homicide.

In a release Wednesday,RCMPsaid"apositive identification on the victim is pending," so they arenot releasing the boy's name, but an autopsy confirmed his death a homicide.

RCMPsay they got a call around5 p.m. on Friday reporting the boy had been missing for up to five days.

Search and rescue officials found the boy's remains on Saturday morning in anindustrial area of town.

Policeinitially said the boy was 12 years old, but made a correction to 11 years old on Wednesday.

In an update on Oct. 7, 2018, RCMPcorrected their information again, saying the boy was indeed 12 at the time of his death.

Rankin Inlet RCMP are asking anyone who may have information on this incident to call the office at 867-645-0123 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Corrections

  • Due to incorrect information provided to CBC by RCMP, a previous version of the story stated that Taparti was 11 years old when he died. He was in fact 12.
