Tlicho communities are preparing for local elections for chief and council next month.

In Behchoko, community members brought up the main issues at a community meeting Saturday.

Residents told candidates crime, homelessness and the integrity of their chief and councillors are the issues they want to see addressed.

"I don't want to hear you say, 'I want, I want, I want.' It's about what we need over here," resident Marjorie Black said at the forum. "What we need is a job. A roof over our head."

Black said she knows the difficulties of finding housing in the community and has been homeless before.

"I'm jobless, I don't have EI, income supports but I'm still here. I'm me," Black said. "I pay for my rent even though I'm jobless, I pay for my power bill out of my sewings."

The community elections for Behchoko are scheduled for June 12, as well as the Tlicho communities of Whati, Gameti and Wekweeti.
