Crime down at Whitehorse airport, but park at your own risk

Planning to park your car in the long term parking lotat Whitehorse's Erik Nielsen airport over the holidays?

Those familiar withtwo separate incidents last summer whendozens of vehicles had their windows smashedmight have second thoughts, but the Yukon government says there have been no reportedincidents since September, when security was increased.

Leah Stone, aviation director for Yukon Highways and Public Works,saidthe department increased their parking lotpatrols.

She wouldn't disclose exactly how many staff have been added so as not to reduce theeffectiveness of the monitoring program.

"We have also commenced a project to install additional video cameras and video surveillance of the parking lots," Stonesaid.

She said existing security cameras have been repositioned and new cameras will be installed "early in 2016."

Stone was unaware if fewer people have been parking their vehicles in the long term lot since last summer's outbreak of vandalism.

She reminded travellers to make sure that belongings left in parked vehicles are secure, because, like the signs say, the airport is not responsible for lost or stolen items.
