CRTC approves Yukon 911 interim service

The CRTC has approved a temporary solution for 911 in the territory's rural communities.

CelineLegault, a spokespersonforthe CRTC, says people will soon be able to call 911outside of the Whitehorse service area. She says callers will receive an automated message.

"When people call 911 there's going to be a message that will direct them either to press onefor police, twofor fire, threefor emergency vehicles, and one of the conditions is if the callis not answered, the call will be forwarded to the local RCMP detachment or the Whitehorse 911."

The Yukon government has committed to have full 911 service, with a live operator, throughout the territory within the next 20 months.
