Whitehorse man admits to killing Christopher Brisson, suggests lesser plea

A Whitehorse man, charged with first degree murder in the 2015 death of Christopher Brisson, has admittedhe killed Brisson.

But Darryl Sheepway, 38, has pleaded not guilty to first degree murder. He claimsto have been intoxicated by drugsat the time,and argues he should therefore face the lesser charge of manslaughter.

Sheepway appeared in Yukon Supreme Court by video on Tuesday, from his Whitehorse jail cell.

His lawyer told the court there's little dispute over the facts in the case.

Brisson's body was found in September 2015 in the Miles Canyon area of Whitehorse. He had been reported missing three days earlier by his family.

Sheepway was arrested almost a year later, in August 2016, and charged with first degree murder.

Federal Crown prosecutors told the court Tuesdaythey will not accept the lesser plea of manslaughter.

A judge and jury trial is now being arranged for sometime next year.

Sheepwayis also facing10 additional charges of armed robbery stemming from an alleged crime spree in Ontario in late 2015. He's accused of robbing a number gas bars and convenience stores in the Brantford and Woodstock regions.

Sheepway is scheduled to appear in Whitehorse court again on Wednesdayto answer to those charges.
