Flu shot demand high in Whitehorse

Yukon's Chief Medical Officer of Health says there is a high demand in Whitehorse for the seasonal flu vaccine, brought on by the sudden increase in the number of cases of the flu since Christmas.

Yukon's Chief Medical Officer of Health says there is a high demand in Whitehorse for the seasonal flu vaccine, broughton by the sudden increase in the number of cases of the flusince Christmas.

Dr. Brendan Hanley says there is enough vaccine for the next few days but if the demand continues there could be a shortage.

"Believe me, we know where every vial of flu vaccine is in Yukon and we're really just literally moving it around Yukon to meet the demand," he said.

Hanley says health officials can also work with other jurisdictions to access vaccine if necessary.

He says the demand for the vaccine is not as high outside Whitehorse because most people in the communities have been vaccinated.

The WhitehorseHealth Centre on QuartzRoad is operating aflu shot clinic Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.A daily flu shot clinic is also being held at the Kwanlin Dun Health Centre.
