Former Nunavut teacher facing additional sex related charges

Johnny Meeko, a former teacher in Sanikiluaq, Nunavut, is facing 28 charges, and may be charged with more.

Former Sanikiluaq, Nunavut, teacher Johnny Meeko now faces several new sex related charges.

Meeko, 60, appeared in court this week in Iqaluit for apreliminary inquiry. He was originally charged in 2012 with offences including sexual assault and sexual interference.

They are alleged to have occurred while he was a teacher at Nuiyak Elementary School in Sanikiluaq between 1984 and 2000. There are about a dozen complainants who range in age from their mid-teens to late 30s.

Defence lawyer James Morton says his client was already facing 28 charges and could face more.

Morton says Meeko's trial could be held next August.
