Gwich'in Tribal Council candidates come forward

David Krutko, former N.W.T. MLA for the Mackenzie Delta, is once again running for office.

After serving four terms, Krutko did not run in last falls territorial election. He's now running for vice-president of the Gwich'in Tribal Council.

Five other candidates are running to replace vice-president Mary Ann Ross, who stepped down this year. They are Grace Blake, Ernest Firth, Janet Koe, Norman Snowshoe and Margaret Spry.

Three people are running for president of the council: Robert Alexie Jr., Brenda McDonald, and the current president, Richard Nerysoo.

Nominations closed Friday at 5 p.m.

The Gwich'in Tribal Council changed its election bylaws this year to state that any community with 100 or more Gwich'in people should have a polling station.

This means there will be polling stations in Yellowknife, Whitehorse and Edmonton for this election. Members also have the choice of mailing in a ballot.

The current leadership of the Gwich'in Tribal Council has decidedto sue the territorial government over devolution. Thecouncil has also said it's appointing an independent investigator toexamine charges of workplace bullyingin its Inuvik office.

The election is set for June 22.
