Gwich'in Tribal Council gets tech upgrade

Small offices in Aklavik, Tsiigehtchic, Inuvik and Fort McPherson will soon be getting an upgrade as the Gwich'in Tribal Council upgrades its equipment.

Small offices run by theGwich'in inInuvik, Fort McPherson,TsiigehtchicandAklavik will soon be getting a boost.

The Gwich'in Tribal Council has received about $400,000 in federal funding to upgrade its information technology.

Robert Alexie is the president of the Gwitch'in Tribal Council. He says the funding will pay to upgrade servers, wiring and telephone systems.

"Everyone relying more and more on the internet and email. So we are hoping the new equipment will help speed it up," he says.

The Tribal Council also plans to hire new IT staff to maintain the upgrades.

Alexie says the improvements will make it easier to use video conferencing and on-line education programs in the communities.
