Harper's official photographer to use drone camera in Iqaluit

Iqaluit city councillors are supporting a plan by the prime minister's official photographer to mount a GoPro camera on a remote-controlled aircraft during Operation Nanook, when it's expected Stephen Harper will be visiting.

Iqaluit city councillorshavelent their support to a request by the Prime Minister's photographer to mount aGoProcamera on a remote controlled airplane during Operation Nanook.

This year, theannual Arctic military exercisewill see 800 military personnel in Frobisher Bay fromAugust 21 to 31, simulating a cruise ship disaster.

Jason Ransom is the official photographer for the Prime Ministers Office.

Transport Canada says Ransom has permission to fly the plane and take pictures.

At a city council meeting last night, the citys chief administrative officer, John Hussey, said photographs will be captured in three different parts of the city.

"One is right behind the hospital. The second location is the Hudson Bay buildings in Apex. And the third location is the breakwater down by the Grind and Brew."

Ransom plans to use the droneAugust 24 to 26. It's expected that Prime Minister Stephen Harper will make an appearance in Iqaluit at that time, as part of his annual summer visit to the North.

  • This story has been updated from an earlier version that stated incorrectly the prime minister's photographer requested approval to use a drone to photograph Stephen Harper's visit to Iqaluit. In fact, the request was to photograph Iqaluit during Operation Nanook, a military exercise. The itinerary for Harper's annual Northern tour has not been released.
