Inuvik looks to trucked liquefied natural gas for energy

The territory's energy corporation says it may have found a solution to the energy problem in Inuvik, N.W.T.

The town has run out of natural gas.

At a meeting of the NWT Chamber of Commerce, NT Energy announced it is launching a pilot project to truck liquefied natural gas to the community.

Andrew Stewart, with NT Energy, said they are still working out the details.

"The Inuvik option is the one we're pursuing most actively. I call it a pilot project because we dont know what the costs are going to be. We're still testing the market to see how much the transportation option is going to cost, what is the vaporizer and storage system is going to be required for Inuvik on site, and how much capital investment will that require," he said.

Stewart said the hope is that 70 per cent of the town's power can be supplied by liquefied natural gas by the middle of next year.
