Iqaluit pool's mystery leak baffles city staff

The city's director of recreation says that every couple of months the city's swimming pool loses up to one third of its water.

Iqaluit city staff are trying to figure out how the swimming pool at the Astro Hill Complex is leaking.

Amy Elgersma, the citys director of recreation, said that every couple of months the pool will lose up to one third of its water.

"The swimming pool is losing water occasionally and this is a mystery we've been trying to solve," she said.

She said the city is working with plumbers to do troubleshooting. With about 3,500 swims a month at the pool, she said it's a big concern.

Iqaluit city councilset a goal last yearto build a new swimming pool by 2013. A request for federal funding to help builda proposed $40-million aquatic centrewas turned down last November.
