Kimmirut man appeals conviction in Mountie killing

A Kimmirut man convicted of first-degree murder in the death of an RCMP officer is appealing the verdict.

Pingoatuk Kolola appeared before the Nunavut Court of Appeal in Iqaluit Tuesday.

Kolola was convicted three years ago of shooting and killing 20-year old Const. Douglas Scott in 2007.

The appeal hearing Tuesday lasted 45 minutes.

Kolola's lawyer argued that the trial judge misspoke more than once when he was giving instructions to the jury and that the jury could have been confused before coming to a verdict.

The Crown disagreed, saying no mistakes had been made and they called the judge's instructions a model for other cases.

The appeal judges have reserved their decision. They will decide if they'll maintain the conviction,overturn it, or order a new trial.
