Nominations open for Yellowknife municipal election

As nominations open today, four Yellowknife city councillors say they hope to keep their seats after Octobers municipal election.

As nominations open today, four Yellowknife city councillors say they hope to keep their seats after October's municipal election.

Linda Bussey, Rebecca Alty, Adrian Bell and Phil Moon Son have confirmed with CBC News that theywill run in the Oct. 19 Yellowknife election.

They join Mayor Mark Heyck, who announced in his 2015 State of the City address earlier this year that he will seek the mayor's seat again.

Two other councillors, Cory Vanthuyne and Dan Wong, have said they will run in the territorial election in November.

Remaining city councillor Niels Konge said Wednesday he hasn't made up his mind yet.

Bob Brooks resigned as a councillor in July.

New blood

At least two people who don't currently sit on city council have confirmed to CBC News they will be filing nomination papers.

Steve Payne, the co-owner of the Ragged Ass Barbers barbershop and a teacher, says he will run.

Another teacher, Beaton Mackenzie who ran unsuccessfully in the 2012 election also says he will enter the 2015 race.

IserveU, a non-profit group that arms candidates with mandates determined by the votes of online users, said WednesdayMarie-Soleil Lacoursiere would become the first person to run for council using the IServeU method.

Candidates have until Sept. 21 to hand in their nomination papers to the office of the returning officer at city hall.
