Nunavut Tunngavik announces nomination dates for president election

The nomination period for Nunavut Tunngavik's election for president will run from Oct. 31 to Nov. 4. Current president Cathy Towtongie won't yet say whether she'll seek re-election.

Nunavut Tunnagavik Inc.'schief returning officer Mary Wilmanhas announced the nomination dates for the upcoming election forpresident.

Candidates may file theirnominations from Oct. 31to Nov. 4.and must fileby 5p.m. local time.

Current NTI President Cathy Towtongiewasre-electedfour years ago,earning nearly 20 per cent of the votestobeat10 other candidates. Thevoter turnoutwas35 per cent.

Contacted by CBC News on Friday, Towtongiecouldn'tsay whether or not she'll seek a third term.

"I'm still working. I'm still getting ready for the NTI annual general meeting next week,and then I'll have options open," Towtongie said. "Until I put in my nomination forms, I'm still working."

In a news release, Wilman saidnominees must be Canadian citizens, beat least 16 years old by Dec.12, 2016, and be enrolled under the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement.

Candidates can get nomination forms from Wilman, community liaison officers, or fromNTI's websiteafter Oct. 31.

Voting day is on Dec.12, with advance polls on Dec.5.
