Polls open for municipal elections in 5 N.W.T. communities

Five N.W.T. communities are electing new councils on Monday. Elections are being held in Fort Simpson, Fort Smith, Hay River,Inuvikand Norman Wells.

Five N.W.T. communities are heading to the polls on Monday.

Elections are being held in Fort Simpson, Fort Smith, Hay River,Inuvikand Norman Wells.

Each municipal council serves a three-year term,with most made up of a mayor and eight councillors, except in Norman Wells (made up of a mayor and six councillors).

Some council members already have their positions secured.In Hay River, Kandis Jamesonwasacclaimed to a third term as mayor. In Fort Simpson, all eight councillorswere acclaimed.

InFort Smithand Fort Simpson, a current councillor is looking to take over as mayor against the incumbent.In Inuvik, both candidates have previously served as mayor.

Finally, in Norman Wells, current mayor Frank Pope is seeking re-election against former MLA Paulie Chinna.

Where to vote?

  • Fort Simpson: Recreationcentre, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Fort Smith: Community and Recreation centre, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Hay River: 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Inuvik: Ingamo Hall Friendship Centre (residents living West of Reliance St.) or Midnight Sun complex (residents living East of Reliance St.), 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Norman Wells: Dennis A Drolet Memorial Hall, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
