Liberal's Michael McLeod wins Northwest Territories

Liberal Michael McLeod has unseated NDP incumbent Dennis Bevington as Northwest Territories MP. 'We needed to see a change,' McLeod said.

Liberal candidateMichael McLeod has wona decisive win in theN.W.T. part of a red wave that took all three seats in the Northern territories.

With 90 of 93 polls reporting,McLeodhas 48.5 per cent of the vote, and a more than 3,000-vote lead over NDP incumbent DennisBevington.

"It's been a long campaign and I'm very glad to see the results of our hard work," McLeodtold supporters in Yellowknife, after the runner-up conceded."We needed to see a change."

The brother of N.W.T. Premier Bob McLeod, Michael McLeod said his team worked hard during this campaign to find Liberal supporters.

"We wanted to reach out to as many communities as we could, as many people as we could, and wecriss-crossedthe Northwest Territories, by road and by air."

Bevington, who tookabout 30 per cent of the vote, went over in person to McLeod's headquarters to concede the election.

Both the Conservative Floyd Roland, who wasin third place withabout 18 per cent, and John Moore of the Green Party,whohas 2.8 per cent of the vote,telephoned to concede.

Bevington told his supporters that the NDP candidates who were elected will work to make sure the change promised by Justin Trudeau's Liberals happens.

"There is one real change that has taken place, though, and that is the end of the Stephen Harper government," he said.
