'My son was at a sleepover 2 doors away': Deadly shooting leaves Whitehorse rattled

Dozens of Whitehorse residents took to social media on Saturday to express their shock and disbelief at the Friday night shooting in the city's Porter Creek area. The incident left one man dead and as of Sunday morning, the RCMP had not reported thata suspect was in custody.

"Cannot even comprehend this right now!" wrote one resident of Stan McCowan Place, the streetwhere the shooting took place outside a home at around 10 p.m. Friday night.

"Heard the shots surreal! Didn't think it was really shots, then the fourth gunshot! Bullet in my neighbour's house! This place has kids in nearly EVERY HOUSE!"

"My son was at a sleepover two doors away from the house party where the man was shot," posted one woman.

Still others vented their frustration about the latest episode of violent crime in the city.

"This town has changed so much and not for the better," echoed Jeff Blackburn on Facebook.

It's the second Yukon homicide of the year.The other took place earlier this year in Watson Lake.

A week before Friday's Whitehorseshooting, the RCMP reported two separate incidents of car windows being smashed in the Porter Creek neighbourhood, on Bamboo Crescent and Mulberry Place.

Both streets are are a less-than-five-minute drive away from Stan McCowan Place, the site of the shooting, a relatively new street developed in the last seven years or so.

No report of suspect in custody

Yukon RCMP had not reported an arrestas of Sunday morning.

Witnesses told officers they saw a dark-coloured minivan, possible red or maroon, fleeing the scene after the shooting. In a press release issued late Saturday afternoon, the RCMP said "the person(s) involved in this incident may be armed."

In Saturday's release Sergeant Greg Holmberg, the head of the Yukon RCMP's major crimes unit, said "we do not believe that this incident was a random act of violence."

Asked Sunday morning if the public's safety is at risk, an RCMP spokesperson pointed to Holmberg's statement, implying that the public's safety is likely not at risk.

The spokesperson said a press conference is not likely to be held until someone is charged with the shooting.

The RCMP is asking anyone with information about Friday's shooting to contact them at 867-667-5555.

While some on social media could be seen grieving for a specific individual, the name of the dead man had not been confirmed and released by the RCMP as of Sunday morning.
