Arctic Bay's Inuujaq School reopens after weekend vandalism

Inuujaq school in Arctic Bay, Nunavut, reopened Wednesday after three youth vandalized it over the weekend.

Officials say the youthsbroke in on Jan. 2, damaged school computers and set off at least a half-dozen fire extinguishers. It was all captured on surveillance tapes.

Paul Diamond, director of property and assetmanagementwithNunavut'sDepartment of Community and Government Services,says officials couldn't make out the youth's faces from the surveillance tapes.

Monday was a scheduled PD day for the school and it remained closed Tuesday.

Most of the mess has been cleaned up but Diamond says officials arekeeping an eye on the air quality.

"The powder that's in the fire extinguishers, although it's not a health risk, it can be an irritant to some people," Diamond said.

"But it is a fine dust. So they've had that cleaned up, but we're flying up with an environmental guy to do some air quality testing."

The ventilation system will also be checked.

There is noword yet on how much the damage willcost to repair.
