City of Whitehorse invites feedback on Sixth Avenue redesign

The City of Whitehorse has released draft two of its design plan for Sixth Avenuein downtown Whitehorse now it's inviting the public to weigh in.

The new design adds more landscaping and design elements to improve walking and cycling between Jarvis and Ogilvie streets.

The plan also suggests changes to the roundabout at Black Street to constrict the entrance and lower the speed of traffic.

Downtown resident David Pharand lived beside the traffic circle for several years.

"My question is, how are you going to slow down traffic before the roundabout? And not just 15 metres, or 20 metres before the roundabout, we're talking, like, 100 metres before the roundabout."

Pharand suggests adding speed bumps.

The city originally proposed what are called "splinter islands" in the roundabout. That design was changed based on feedback that it wouldn't be enough to address the speed concerns.

Pharand also hopes the city finds funding to bury the power line along Sixth something the administration says would cost about $1 million in city funding.

"It's one of those things, you know, if you don't do it now, you'll never do it. Maybe in another 50 years," Pharand said.

The city is accepting feedback on the Sixth Avenueredesign until July 29.
