Whitehorse drivers stock up on cheaper gas

People in Whitehorse are seeing gas prices theyhaven't seen in awhile.

At least one gas station was selling regular gas for 99.9 cents per litre on Thursday and other stations have since followed suit.

According to Statistics Canada, the last time gas was under a dollar a litre in Whitehorse was in May, 2009. Even that was just a short lived dip as gas prices had soared well over a dollar the year before.

While some economists are saying lower gas prices won't come without a price to the Canadian economy because of the blow to oil revenues, people filling up their vehicles in Whitehorse were happy.

"I'm very pleased, especially when we drive a big rig like this," Alicia Swinamer says.

The last survey by the Yukon government on Jan. 7, said the average price per litre in Whitehorse was $1.08.

The government figures also show a sharp drop in the average price of furnace oil in Whitehorse from about $1.36 per litre last fall to $1.08 this month.
