Whitehorse tenants evicted using SCAN Act

Residents of a home in Whitehorse have been evicted using the territory's legislation to shut down drug houses.

The territorial justice department says this is the first time it has worked with the Kwanlin Dun First Nation to shut down a drug house in the McIntyre subdivision of Whitehorse.

Spokesperson Dan Cable said the residents of the house were given an eviction notice on Oct. 15. He said the home is a rental unit owned by the First Nation.

"There were long-standing complaints about that property and more recently serious concerns expressed by community members about disturbances, noise and drug use and distribution from the property all in close proximity to neighbours and children in the community," he said.

Cable said an extensive investigation by members of the Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods (SCAN) unit confirmed the complaints.

He said the residents can appeal the eviction in court.
