Whitehorse tent city moves to public property

Yukon's housing crisis protesters have moved location after White Pass and Yukon Route railway officials followed through with eviction notices Thursday.

Whitehorse's housing crisisprotesters have moved location after White Pass and Yukon Route railway officials followed through with eviction notices for those camping on its property Thursday.

The protesterswere served eviction notices on Tuesdayandgiven 48 hours to leave White Pass property.

Since June, they had been camped outside the Yukon's legislative building on 2nd Avenueto protest a lack of affordable housing. The protesters have all moved a few metres away onto public property, alongside the Yukon Government parking lot.

Michael Brandt, White Passs vice-president of marketing and administration, loaned his truck to help move the last trespassing trailer unit, belonging to protester Kevin Sweeney.

"We're serious about the eviction order," he said. "We came out a little earlier and Kevinwas very supportive and understanding but had no means to move the trailer, so we offered to help."

He said the move shifts liability for the campers from White Pass to the government.

"We are in co-operation with Yukon government and that just makes it more consolidated for them to deal with, and they are dealing with it. We've been in meetings with them and they are dealing with these peopleat a macro level to address the issues and a personal level with all the people here."

A spokesperson for the Yukon government said they had no plans to move the remaining protesters.

At last count, there were three people on site who said they planned to camp there for the winter.
