Yukon government to review safety of Takhini River bridge

A Whitehorse resident is urging the Yukon government to improve safety on the Takhini River Bridge.

The two-lane bridge is part of the North Klondike Highway.

Mel Needham's friends were recently involved ina serious two-vehicle accident on the bridge.

"I've known for some time that's a dangerous intersection," Needham said.

She says an inclinedcurve near the bridgecan lead vehicles to slide into the opposite lane when conditions are slippery.

Needham wrote to the department of Highways and Public Works about the incident. She took pictures of points around the area she thinks are unsafe.

Needhamsaid she's pleased the department has agreed to look into the matter.

The department has installed signs warning motorists to slow down.

"I notice that there were some new signs already in a couple of the areas that I identified as sort of more dangerous, where more signage was needed," she said.

Highways and Public Works is currently reviewing the accident and the engineering of the bridge. The department says the review will take about a month.
