In a rare show of solidarity, the Yukon's two opposition parties are presenting a united front when it comes to corrections.

Both the Liberals and New Democratic Party are advocating for an aboriginal liaison for the Whitehorse Correctional Centre.

Darius Elias, the member of the legislative assembly for the Vuntut Gwitchin riding, said 80 per cent of the population at the centre is aboriginal and having a liaison makes sense.

"With a $70 million brand-new facility I don't think this is too much to ask. I believe this to be a legitimate concern that myself and Kevin Barr are presenting a reasonable solution," said Elias.

Elias, along with Mount Lorne-Southern Lakes MLA Kevin Barr, are asking the justice minister to create a new full time liaison position.

Elias said the liaison would help inmates prepare for life after prison. He adds the liaison would provide support services to all inmates and help facilitate their interaction with correctional staff.
