How Yukoners reacted when most of their territory went without power

Most of Yukon went without power for a few hours Saturday after a hydro unit in Whitehorse went offline.

For nearly three hours, power was out in communities across the territory, with temperatures dropping to nearly -30 C in some of the affected areas.

Theoutages hit the entire grid, includingWhitehorse, Dawson City, Mayo, Keno City, Haines Junction and Carmacks.

"We had an issue with our largest Whitehorse unit. It went down and there was a cascading effect that essentially took outall the communities that are on the Yukon grid," explained Janet Patterson, aspokeswomanfor Yukon Energy.

"There were a few communities that rely on diesel, but everyone else who is on the grid lost their entire power," Pattersonsaid, adding they'll know more about what caused the outage on Monday.

But it appearsYukonerstook it in stride. Many used social media to update each other on conditions, for some good-natured complaining, and to thank the crews working to get the power restored.
