Yukon skiers rally to support Emily Nishikawa in Sochi

Yukoners are invited to the Whitehorse Cross Country Ski Club between 9 and 11 a.m. Sunday to sign a banner that Nishikawa's parents will take with them to the Winter Olympics in Russia.

Skiers and fans will gather at the Whitehorse Cross Country Ski Club Sunday to show their support for Olympian Emily Nishikawa.

She's the Yukon cross-country skier who made Canada's Olympic team for the Sochi 2014 Olympic Games.

"We want to make sure club members know about Emily and that we have produced an Olympian, so we're trying to show support from the club," saidMikeGladish.

The public is invited to the ski club between 9 and 11 a.m.to sign a banner for Nishikawa that herparents will take with them to Russia.

Emily's mother, Joan Stanton, is thrilled.

"You know, you think back on all the years, the wins and the losses and the trials and tribulations,and it's very emotional," Stanton says. "I'mjust really thrilled for her."

"She's worked so hard for it," says father, Bob Nishikawa, "and she really deserves to have the trip over there."

Emily's parents leave Whitehorse on Monday to support her.

Emily herselfis already in Europe at a training camp in Italy.
