Canada goose: national icon or national pest?

Canada geese have become so much of nuisance in the tiny community of Aylesford, N.S., some farmers say their fields are going to the birds.

Canada geese have become so much of a nuisance in the tiny community of Aylesford, N.S., some farmers say their fields are going to the birds.

"The most disgusting thing ever on this earth," said Neva Saunders.

She said in close to 50 years of farming she has never witnessed such a pest.

Saunders and her husband Vernon said the geese almost drove them out of farming when they mowed through their fields.

"They should be good target practice," said Saunders

The goose hunt, long legal in Canada, has been expanded in an attempt to cull the population.

In some places across Canada the goose population has increased five fold over the last few decades.

"National Icon? Well, the ones who say it's a national icon better have it in their yard," said Saunders.
