Police offered few details Monday about the discovery of human remains in Cape Breton last week.

Two hunters who were out setting rabbit snares made the discovery late Friday afternoon near Glace Bay.

Nova Scotia's medical examiner has sent a forensic doctor and an anthropologist to examine the remains to help determine the age and sex of the person as well as the approximate time of death.

Cape Breton Regional Police have contacted the family of Brett MacKinnon, a young woman from Glace Bay who went missing in June 2006.

They say they do not know if the remains are MacKinnon's, although her bank accounts have not been used since she was reported missing.

Police said it could be several days before their investigation is complete.

The medical examiner asked police to bring in a ground search and rescue crew to search the surrounding area where the remains were found.
