Copper stolen from Halifax street lights

Street lights in two areas of Halifax stopped working this week after thieves pulled copper wires out of them.

RCMP said the copper went missing from Lower Sackville and Wellington.

On Monday, officers were called to investigate after street lights went out onPratt and Whitney Drive, near Old Guysborough Road in Goffs by the Halifax airport.

Theyfound copper wire had been removed from the conduits that run between the light poles.

"Scorch marks were found on one pole, which illustrates the danger of this type of theft," said Cpl. Scott MacRae.

A vehicle may have been used to remove the wire, he added.

On Wednesday, RCMP took a call from a business on Highway 2 in Wellington. A storage container had been broken into and three rolls of copper wire were stolen, MacRae said.

"Suspects had removed a large lock to gain access to the container.The copper wire was rolled onto nearby railway tracks," he said.

Police believe a truck was then used to move the large rolls of wire, which are worth about $9,000.

MacRae said police do not think the latest thefts are connected to the recent arrest of two men for stealing copper wire in Lower Sackville.
