Crews douse crushed car fire at Halifax recycling plant

After several hours of work, Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency crews extinguishedpiles of crushed cars that caught fireat an industrialrecycling plant in the Goodwood area Sunday afternoon.

District Chief Brad Connors said the call came in just after 4 p.m.and by about 6 p.m. more than a dozen fire trucks were on scene. The fire wasbetween Mills Drive and Evergreen Place.

Shortly before 8 p.m., the fire was out but some crews remained on the scene to douse hot spots.

Connors said the carssparked a brush fire in the afternoon, but it was contained more quickly than the industrial fire.

The cars proved more difficult to extinguish, Connors said.

"It's not so much the size of the fire but the difficulty we're having at getting at all the hidden spots."

Connors said an excavator helped with the effort, but that work had to be suspended at pointsbecause of heavy smoke.

Dark smoke from the fire could be seen blowing across HRMfrom several kilometres away.
