Crosswalk safety flags set up at west-end Halifax intersection

A Halifax crosswalk safety advocate hopes new reflective flags will keep pedestrians safe when crossing the street.

Norm Collins helped installthe flags at the intersection of Mumford Road and Leppert Street in Halifax at lunchtimeon Thursday.

He previously installed similar flags at an intersection on Waverley Road in Dartmouth.

Collins told CBC News his dentist, whose office is near Mumford Road and Leppert Street, gave him the money for the most recent set of flags.

The idea for crosswalk flags came from Collins' neighbour, Brian Slaunwhite. Slaunwhitesawcrosswalk flags ona trip to Salt Lake City. When he returned home, he shared the idea with Collins andhelped himmake the flags.

On Thursday, Slaunwhite was on site to help install the flag system.

The orange flags have a reflective strip with the message "Be Careful! Be Seen!Be Safe!"This is the message behind Collins's ongoing crosswalk safety advocacy campaign.

Collinsfought city hall for five years before he convinced Halifax council to let him place the flags at crosswalks.
