After more than two decades in local politics,Dartmouth Coun. Gloria McCluskey hasannounced plans to step down at the end of her term this fall, but the 84-year-old saidshe's not looking forward to retirement.

"That morning after the election, where there are no emails coming, no phone calls coming in, I'll be lost," she said.

During her time in elected office, McCluskey has been a vocal advocate for Dartmouth. Sheserved as mayor of the City of Dartmouthfor fouryears prior to amalgamation in 1996.

After an 8-yearbreak from politics, she jumped back in again in 2004, this time ascouncillor for Dartmouth Centre in the Halifax Regional Municipality.

"I think it's time, she's dedicated her life to public service and she's done a fantastic job," Coun.LindaMosher said Tuesday.

"I know she's been a role model for me and many others, but it's time that she takes some time for herself and spends some time with her family and I wish her all the best."

McCluskey said her decision to retire hinged on concerns over what would happen if she fell ill. She said she worries an illnesswould force a byelection that would be costly to taxpayers.

"This is a tough one, I love my job, I love working for the people," she said. "I'm really going to miss it and I don't knowwhat I'll do because I need a challenge in my life."
