Jesse Raymond Gaetz charged after overdose victim Jesse Smith dies

A 24-year-old man taken from a Dartmouth apartment early New Year's Day after a drug overdose has died in hospital and police say a 23-year-old is charged with criminal negligence causing death.

A 24-year-old man taken from a Dartmouth apartment early New Year's Day with medical issues stemming from a drug overdose has died in hospital and a man arrested in connection with the incident is now facing charges.

Police have identified Jesse Smith of Dartmouth as the victim.

They say Jesse Raymond Gaetz of Dartmouth hasbeen charged with criminal negligence causing death.Policearrested the23-year-old Dartmouth man Friday in connection with the drug overdose.

Police allege Gaetz didn't get medical help for Smith.They say the two men were friends.

Smith was was taken from Dartmouth's Horizon Court to hospital in critical condition at 1:20 a.m. on Friday. Police say he was pronounced dead that night.

Police say they're waiting for analysis on what type of drug caused Smith's overdose.

Gaetz is being held in custody over the weekend and is scheduled to appear in Dartmouth provincial court on Jan. 4.
