Sydney port development plan could see federal support

Plans to build a new port in Sydney, N.S., were acknowledged during question period onWednesday in Ottawa and while the infrastructure minister didn't make a specific commitment to the project, he says it's on his radar.

Cape Breton Regional Municipality announced plans for the portin June 2015.

'Shared infrastructure priorities'

Mark Eyking, MP for Sydney-Victoria, asked the federal government if plans for a second berth for the port of Sydney would be "worthy of consideration for infrastructure."

Eykingsays the project would increasetraffic at the port, especially in the cruise ship sector. He saidit would have a positive impact on Cape Breton's economy overall.

Infrastructure MinisterAmarjeetSohisays the government has committed $60 billion ofnew money into infrastructure over the next ten years.

"We understand that well planned infrastructure investments in regions like Cape Breton generate economic growth, create jobs, and leave a lasting legacy for Canadians," saidSohi.

"I have met with my counterparts in Nova Scotia, and we will continue to work together on our shared infrastructure priorities."
