Games group targets Haligonians to 'support the bid'

Don't support Halifax's bid for the 2014 Commonwealth Games? Wait until you see our ads, the bid committee says.

The group lobbying to bring the 2014 Commonwealth Games to Halifax now has its sights set on winning over area residents.

The bid committee is launching an advertising campaign Wednesday that it says will focus on the benefits of bringing the Games to the Halifax region.

The ads will appear on public spaces, from the sides of Metro Transit buses to park benches. There are also lawn signs and window stickers that read "Here we support the bid."

"We're hoping that people will feel so inclined to put lawn signs on their properties," said communications directorDebbie Hache.

The bid committee expects the Games to cost about $785 million.

The group has the support of Halifax regional council, but some councillors have spoken out about the costs and the legacy the Games would leave behind for the average citizen.

However,Coun. Bob Harvey is ready to show his support.

"Put me down for a licence plate and a lawn sign," Harvey said Tuesday as council got a sneak peak at the ads. "This is an inspiring campaign."

More posters and billboards will be unveiled in June when Commonwealth Games delegates from around the world arrive in Halifax.

A decision on which city will host the 2014 event will be announced in November 2007. Glasgow, Scotland and Abuja, Nigeria, are also in the running.
