Mother of four says some playgrounds are no longer safe

A mother of four children in Glace Bay wants better playgrounds in her community.

Tammie Ogley says the town's playgrounds don't interest children and several, particularly Queen Elizabeth Park playground near downtown, are falling apart.

"The last time I was there the two slides were broken," said Ogley, whose children are 11, 8, 6 and 3.

"The park was in rough shape. There might have been a couple of swings and a slide at that point, and a sandbox. The slide was all roped off and the other slide, the railings were hanging off.

"What's there isn't even maintained, so it's not even a safe place to take your children."

Ogley has started a Facebook group called Parents for Playgrounds. She hopes to gather a group of like-minded parents who might have ideas for a fundraiser.

Ogley says she wants a playground that had something for all ages.

"A walking track, basketball court, maybe a built-up playground area that has a low fence around it so the little ones can't run off," she said.

"You can have a visual of everybody at the same time. Open concept but a lot of different activities at once. And even a little splash pad."

Ogley said she thinks the Queen Elizabeth Park playground would be the perfect place to build a large community play and recreation area.
