Harvest House ceiling collapse shuts down Glace Bay soup kitchen

The Harvest House Ministries soup kitchen in Glace Bay, N.S., has closed because of a ceiling collapse, but the organization's work hasn't stopped.

Ministry now delivering food baskets to people's homes

The Harvest House Ministriessoup kitchen in GlaceBay, N.S., has closed because of a ceiling collapse,but the organization's work hasn't stopped.

Early last month, the dining room and kitchen's aging ceiling fell throughin several places.

Coordinator MelvinSangstersays instead of shutting down completely, volunteers and staff arenow delivering food baskets to the homes ofpeople in need.

"A lotof them don't have cars, no way of getting different places. They are all on a fixed income, a low income, and they need help in every way possible," said Sangster.

"We are staying because our heart is here with the people and we believe that God sent us here to help the people and that's what we're going to do."

The food baskets feature canned goods and non-perishable food.

Sangstersays they are looking for a new facility and hope to find a locationwith a kitchen by Christmas.

Harvest House hasservedhot meals to about 60 people a day for the past15 years.
