Hockey bag homicide case prompts $150K reward

Cape Breton Regional Police have released evidence they uncovered during the investigation into the death of Laura Jessome in hopes that it may lead to tips to solve the homicide, while the province has posted a $150,000 reward in the case.

Jessome's body was found in a hockey bag in the Mira River onMay 25, 2012.

Monday morning, police revealed that divers found two other items in the water in the same area.

"Police divers located a blue backpack containing a pair of hockey gloves," said Chief Peter MacIsaac. "We want to locate the owner of these two pieces of property. We believe there are people out there who can help us with this information and we want to talk to them."

MacIsaac said Jessome was last seen on May 2 in the New Aberdeen area of Glace Bay. He said the 21-year-old was holding several items including two suitcases,a blue laundry basket and small plastic bags that contained clothing and personal belongings.

"She had two suitcases with her: one had a floral pattern, the other is believed to be black in colour," he said. "Police have not yet located any of these items."

MacIsaac wouldn't elaborate on the significance of any of the items that were discovered or remain missing, citing the importance of the investigation.

Campaign for tips

The province is now adding Jessome's case to the Major Unsolved Crimes Program. It offers up to $150,000 cash for tips that lead to solving the crime.

The police are also aggressively trying to generate awareness of the case. They'll be placing adds on transit and cable television stations. A police vehicle will also display an advertisement as it drives around the area calling for tips.

The police want people to call a hotline set up for major crime tips. The number is 902-563-5574.

"I can tell you everything that can possibly be done in relation to this investigation is being done," said MacIsaac. "No piece of information is too small."

In early June, police searched three residences in Glace Bay as part of the investigation. They also seized two vehicles.

Jessome's family has been vocal throughout the investigation, pleading for anyone with information to come forward so they can have closure. In June, Jessome's father Charlesdied of a possible heart attack.
