Steady snow expected until late evening as winds pick up

A messy day on the roads for the province as we contend with a round of snow and in some cases a mix of snow and rain. Here's what's ahead for Monday evening, tonight, and Tuesday.

Most snowfall totals will range from 8 to 15 cm, with up to 20 cm around Cape Breton

It's a messy day on Nova Scotia's roads as we contend with a round of snow and in some cases a mix of snow and rain.

Here's what's ahead for Monday night and Tuesday:

Tonight

The back edge of the steadiest snow should be clearing Halifax and northern areas of the Annapolis Valley by early evening. Following that will be a lighter mix of flurries and showers.

It will take until 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. for the steady snow to ease to flurries for north and northeastern areas of the mainland. Cape Breton will remain in the steadier snow until near midnight before it begins to ease.

Most snowfall totals will range from 8 cm to 15 cm with more widespread amounts of 15 cm to 20 cm around the north and northeast of the mainland as well as Cape Breton.

Look out for icy spots on untreated roads

Occasional gusts of 30 to 60 km/h will accompany the snow so be cautious of blowing snow reducing visibility on roads and highways.

Gusts of over 100 km/h are still expected in Inverness County this evening before easing overnight. A Les Suetes wind warning remains in effect.

Tomorrow

A quick word of caution for those who will see rain or showers on the back edge of the snow winds will turn back to the northwest behind the low and temperatures will, in most cases, drop back to or below freezing Tuesday morning. This means that icy spots on untreated roads could develop.

Otherwise, on Tuesday, we can expect a mix of sun and cloud with scattered light flurries in the province. For more weather updates, check out my Facebook page.
