Teens facing weapons charges after Lockview High lockdown

Two teenagers are facing multiple weapons-related chargesfollowinga noon-hour lockdownMonday at a Halifax-area high school.

Police initially said they arrested an 18-year-old man who they believed was carrying a cap gun. On Tuesday,RCMP said they did, in fact, find a firearm and they also arrested a15-year-old youth.

RCMP were called to Lockview High School in Fall Riverat 12:09 p.m. to investigate a weapons call. Someone had reported two people, including someone carrying a firearm, wereon a path by the school.

In a release sent Tuesday, police said they figured out who the teenagers were and reached them by phone. Officers arrested them at a business on Fall River Roadafter the pair told police where they were.

RCMP found a firearm with the help of the K-9 unit and searched a home on the same road.No one was hurt in the incident. The charges also relate to a weapon found in the home, said Cpl. Lisa Croteau.

Multiple charges

The 15-year-old is facing seven charges and the 18-year-old is facing nine.Both are charged with:

• Possession of a restricted or prohibited firearm with ammunition.
• Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.
• Manufacture of a firearm.
• Carrying a concealed weapon.
• Possession of a firearm knowing it is unauthorized.
• Unauthorized possession of a firearm.
• Unsafe storage of a firearm.

The older teen is also charged with:

• Unauthorized possession of a prohibited weapon.
• Possession of a prohibited weapon knowing it is unauthorized.

The 18-year-old was due in Dartmouth provincial court Tuesday, while the younger teen wasscheduled to appear in Halifax provincial youth court.

RCMP are continuing to look into what happened.

Nearby schools were under hold-and-secure measures

On Monday, elementary and junior high schools near Lockview were under hold-and-secure measures while RCMPinvestigated.

Lockview's principal, Bernie MacEachern, sent a notice to parents saying the school contacted police after a student reported that two men who were close to the school's property possibly had a weapon. The notice said RCMP helped secure the building and the lockdown was lifted following the arrest of the two people.
