Markel Jason Downey faces 3 attempted murder charges

A medal-winning Nova Scotia boxer now faces serious charges, including three counts of attempted murder, in connection to a shooting in Cole Harbour over the weekend.

A medal-winning Nova Scotia boxer now faces serious charges, including three counts of attempted murder, in connection to a shooting in Cole Harbour over the weekend.

Markel Jason Downey faces 20 charges including a charge of robbery with a firearm relating to a home invasion and shooting on Arklow Drive on Sunday. He appeared briefly in Dartmouth provincial court on Tuesday and his case was put over until Thursday.

Patrick MacEwen, Downey'slawyer,hopes to set a bail hearing before Christmas.

"Obviously they are very serious charges. He's doing about as well as can be expected in the circumstances," he said.

"He seems to be keeping it together,"

Downey, 18, and three other teenagers were arrested this week after four men wearing bandanas forced their way into a house on Arklow Drive and opened fire Sunday evening.

Paramedics rushed the victims a 17-year-old boy, a 17-year-old girl and an 18-year-old man to the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre in Halifax. They remain in hospital.

Downey represented Nova Scotia as a boxer in the 2011 Canada Games, which were held in Halifax. Hewon gold in the 49-kilogram to 52-kilogram category.

According to his Facebook page, he's still an active boxer and travelled to Puerto Rico to fight earlier this year.

Downey is charged with:

  • 3 counts of attempted murder.
  • 1 count of break and enter to commit an indictable offence.
  • 2 counts of robbery.
  • 1 count of careless use of firearm.
  • 3 counts of pointing a firearm.
  • 2 counts of possess weapon dangerous to public.
  • 1 count of carrying a concealed weapon.
  • 1 count of possession of a firearm with no licence.
  • 1 count of possession of a firearm obtained by crime.
  • 1 count of possession of a firearm contrary to a court order.
  • 3 counts of failing to comply with recognizance/undertaking.

The three 17-year-olds also charged in the case appeared in court on Tuesday. Each is charged with:

  • 3 counts of attempted murder.
  • 1 count of break and enter to commit an indictable offence.
  • 2 counts of robbery.
  • 1 count of careless use of firearm.
  • 3 counts of pointing a firearm.
  • 2 counts of possess weapon dangerous to public.
  • 1 count of carrying a concealed weapon.
  • 1 count of possession of a firearm withno licence.
  • 1 count ofpossession of aloaded prohibited/restricted firearm.
  • 1 count of possession of a firearm obtained in crime.
  • 1 count of disguise with intent.
