MLA Clarke resigns to run federally

Cecil Clarke has resigned his seat in the Nova Scotia legislature so he can run for the Conservatives in the federal election.

Cecil Clarke has resigned his seat in the Nova Scotia legislature so he can run for the Conservatives in the federal election.

Tory Leader Jamie Baillie confirmed Clarke's resignation as the member for Cape Breton North.

Clarke announced last summer that he would seek the nomination in the federal riding of Sydney-Victoria, currently held by Liberal MP Mark Eyking.

The nomination meeting is Sunday.

Clarke was first elected in a provincial byelection in 2001 and while in government held several portfolios including economic development, energy and justice.

Baillie said Clarke's hard work resulted in many significant achievements for Nova Scotia.
