N.S. teen to be sentenced for Patriquen shooting

A Nova Scotia teenager who shot a man and left him paralyzedmay find out this week if he will be sentenced as an adult.

The 18-year-old was convicted earlier this year of attempted murder in the 2008 shooting of Michael Patriquen Jr. He was 17 at the time and therefore cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

The North Preston teen is scheduled to be in court Tuesday for the start of a four-day sentencing hearing.

The Crown is asking for an adult sentence, which could mean between eight to 14 years in prison. The maximum sentence for a youth is three years.

Patriquen Jr. was shot at his Middle Sackville home early on Nov. 11, 2008. He is now paralyzed and uses a wheelchair.

Sergio Bowers, 21, of Lower Sackville was sentenced in May to eight yearsfor his part in the shooting. He was given credit for three years served while in custody.

The court heard that Bowers had several disagreements with Patriquen Jr. andasked an armed "individual" to go to his house.
