Stephen McNeil looking for federal money to improve Nova Scotia internet

Nova Scotia Premier Stephen McNeilis hoping to tap into the federal government's Building Canada Fund to improve high-speed internet access across the province.

Residents and municipalities in rural parts of the province have long complained about slow and unreliable internet, while some have complained that they aren't even able to get internet access.

According to Infrastructure Canada, the Building Canada Fund supports infrastructure projects that help build "a stronger economy, a cleaner environment and strong and prosperous communities."

On Friday, the province tasked a consulting firm with determining whether it's possible to deliver faster and affordable internet in rural Nova Scotia.

McNeil met with Prime Minister Justin TrudeauWednesday, marking the first time the two have met face to face since Trudeau took office.

During their conversation, McNeil brought up other priorities, including federal government support and investment inthe Canadian Coast Guard and the Institute for Ocean Research Enterprise, a hub for ocean technology research and development.

"The prime minister has been very receptive," saidMcNeil.
