Strait school board cutting 14 teaching jobs

The Strait Regional School Board is cutting 14 teaching jobs and 27 support staff jobs.

The Strait Regional School Board is cutting 14 teaching jobs and 27 support staff jobs.

It's reducing its budget by $3.6 million for the next school year.

In a news release, the Strait Regional School Board saysprovincial funding was reduced by 2.47 per cent, a $1.8-milliondecrease from its 2010-2011 funding.

The board was told it must cover costs such as utilities, fuel and salary increases.

Superintendent Jack Beaton said most of the job cuts will be through attrition, but there will be some layoffs.

In April, several Nova Scotia school boards announced job cuts as they tried to cope with smaller enrolments and themandatedbudget cut.

At that time, the Strait board said it would lose 14 teachers and six administration staff, including three consultants.
