Third Halifax shooting may be random: police

A man was shot in Halifax Saturday night in what police say appears to have been a random act.

Three men were walking on Creighton Streetaround 11 p.m. when they heard gunshots. One of the men was hit in the back.

Police found the 19-year-old lying down on Charles and Gottingen streets. He was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Police said he is expected to make a full recovery.

"Investigators are exploring the possibility this may be a random act," said Staff Sgt. Barb Saunders.

'It's normal'

One man said he had heard five shots and a man screaming. The man, who didn't want to be named, said "it's normal" for the area and added he hears shots three or four times a year.

Othersworried about kids getting accidentally shot or killed.

David Levy said he has lived in the area for a long time."I have no problem living here. I love my neighbourhood," he said Sunday.

Hesaid the neighbourhood was like a family and people wouldn't be deterred by the rash of shootings. "You've got to overcome things," he said.

The teenager shot Saturday was the third person shot in the same few blocks this weekend.Two men were shot on nearby Clifton Street Friday. One man died in that attack, which police said was drug-related. The other man was treated in hospital and released.

There wasanother shooting on Quinpool RoadThursday. According to CBC figures, there have been 26 shooting incidents in HRM this year.

Police promised to increase their presence in the area.
