Carleton Ravens football team returns

The Carleton Ravens football club are returning to the field this year, after a 15-year absence.

The football team was out in force Thursday afternoon, the first day of training camp and the first time a Ravens football team has been on the field since 1998.

"It's just great for Ottawa football," said Ottawa-native Nick Gorgichuck, a quarterback for the Ravens.

"To have two university teams now in the city it's great and you know, keep the Ottawa talent in Ottawa hopefully," said Gorgichuck.

Old team was scrapped because of costs

Carleton scrapped the team in the nineties for financial reasons. The new team is backed by Old Crows Football Inc., a not-for-profit run by alumni and former Ravens players.

"There is an understanding that it will be self-sustainable and the Old Crows are working really hard to do that," said Jennifer Brenning, the director of recreation and athletics at Carleton.

Steve Sumarah, Head Coach for the Ravens, said the team is excited to bring football back to Carleton.

"There's been some fantastic players and coaches over the years that have donned the Ravens' colours and it's our job to make those guys proud," said Sumarah.

The Ravens will play eight regular season games.

The season opener is September 2nd in London against Western.
