Death of cyclist hit by bus probed

Ottawa police continue to investigate the death of a 34-year-old cyclist who was hit by a transit bus from Gatineau, Que., on Sussex Drive late Wednesday afternoon.

Ottawa police continue to investigate the death of a 34-year-old cyclist who was hit by a transit bus from Gatineau, Que., on Sussex Drive late Wednesday afternoon.

Police said the woman had been cycling in the lane shared by bicycles and buses when she was hit.

Alcohol and speed did not appear to be a factor in the collision, which occurred in front of the Foreign Affairs building, police said.

Paramedics said the woman appeared to have been dragged 30 metres, suffering major head trauma and other injuries.

The 44-year-old driver was alone on the bus when it hit the cyclist.

Paramedics said he was transported to hospital and treated for shock.

The identity of the cyclist is being withheld pending notification of the next of kin.

It's the second fatal incident involving a Gatineau bus on the Ottawa side of the river this summer.

In June, a 55-year-old man was killed near the Shepherds of Good Hope on Murray Street.

Buses from Socit de Transport de l'Outaouais (STO) regularly carry commuters back and forth between Gatineau and Ottawa.
